State Solar Tax Incentives Guide (Part 3)

Purchasing a solar energy storage system can be costly upfront, but there may be incentives beyond the federal tax credit applicable in your state that will help you see a quicker return on investment.

Below, Geneverse covers the following states as part 3 of our blog series:

  • Nebraska
  • Nevada
  • New Hampshire
  • New Jersey
  • New Mexico
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • North Dakota
  • Ohio
  • Oklahoma
  • Oregon
  • Pennsylvania

Nebraska

Homeowners in Nebraska with solar energy systems can take advantage of federal tax incentives. Nebraska does have net metering that helps homeowners with solar see credits on their energy bills and also provides fixed rate loans for homeowners converting to solar. Unfortunately, Nebraska does not have any state-specific tax incentives in place currently.

Nevada

Since more than 20% of state energy comes from solar, Nevada has a booming solar job market. However, Nevada does not have any state-specific incentives or credits currently, which may change some time in the future. Homeowners with solar can capitalize on the federal Investment Tax Credit while also taking advantage of net metering.

New Hampshire

New Hampshire is among the priciest states in the country when it comes to electricity, so investing in solar can quickly pay off big by saving you thousands of dollars per year that you’d normally spend on a costly electric bill. New Hampshire also provides a property tax exemption, a net metering program, as well as the Residential Renewable Electrical Generation Rebate program.

New Jersey

New Jersey can take advantage of the federal ITC credit as well as a number of incentives from the state itself. New Jersey offers state solar incentives in the form of SRECs, net-metering, as well as certain tax exemptions that can be applied to energy system purchases. Most incentives require that homeowners own their energy storage systems. New Jersey also offers the Successor Solar Incentive (SuSI) Program, sales tax exemption, and property tax exemption.

New Mexico

New Mexico offers a variety of state incentives, including the New Mexico Solar Tax Credit, which is a 10% tax credit that can be applied to solar installation for homeowners, businesses, as well as farms. This credit can reduce state tax payments by 10% (or up to $6,000).

New Mexico also has the Sustainable Building Tax Credit, which provides a tax credit if solar is installed as part of a home’s sustainable building efforts. However, the U.S. Green Building Council must determine the home to be certified sustainable. In addition to these benefits, New Mexico also offers a property tax exemption.

New York

New York offers a wide variety of incentives, including sales tax exemption and property tax exemption. There are also programs such as the New York City Property Tax Abatement (PTA) where building owners placing grid-connected solar energy systems into service are eligible for a 4-year Tax Abatement.

New Yorkers can also take advantage of the New York State Solar Equipment Tax Credit, which is equal to 25% of qualified expenses for solar energy systems. New York also has numerous financing incentives such as the NY-Sun Initiative.

North Carolina

North Carolina has a fast-growing solar energy sector due to incentives offered by the state. North Carolina offers a State Property Tax Exemption as well as low-interest loans for those who need to finance their energy storage systems. North Carolina energy companies also offer incentives. For example, Duke Energy offers the North Carolina Solar Rebate Program for residential, commercial, and nonprofit customers.

North Dakota

North Dakota does not offer dedicated state rebates when it comes to solar panel installation. However, some manufacturers offer independent solar rebates, which are usually time sensitive. LG, for example, offers a $600 solar rebate on equipment, which installers can help customers redeem over the course of the year. Homeowners converting to solar in North Dakota can also take advantage of property tax exemptions for renewable energy purchases.

Ohio

Ohio residents can capitalize on federal, state, as well as local programs to offset installation costs. Ohio provides SRECs and qualified energy project tax exemptions that help offset upfront solar costs. Cities like Cincinnati and Cleveland also offer property tax exemptions and residential tax abatements that help homeowners converting to solar save dollars.

Oklahoma

There are no state solar incentives in Oklahoma, but homeowners with solar can utilize the ITC credit as well as a robust net metering program in the state of Oklahoma. Some solar energy system providers in Ohio do provide their own cash rebates.

Oregon

Oregon is starting to be considered as one of the nation’s rising stars as far as solar energy is concerned. Oregon offers strong solar incentives as well as favorable net metering laws that help solar owners see the quickest return on investment possible. Oregon has a Oregon Solar + Storage Rebate Program that provides rebates for solar energy systems with storage, helping both residential customers as well as low-income service providers. Oregon also has a variety of city-specified incentives that help solar owners see a quick return on investment.

Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania is among the few states in the country where homeowners can earn Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) from generating electricity using solar PV modules. Residents can also take advantage of the Pennsylvania Sunshine Program, which is an incentive geared towards helping homeowners and small businesses. Pennsylvania also offers city-specific incentives such as Solarize Philly, which aims to make solar power more affordable to the masses.
