Arctic Outbreak: Heavy Lake Effect Snow Hits Great Lakes Region and Other Parts of the Country

As December gets underway areas of the country are starting to see severe winter weather as well as experience extreme weather events.

A big part of being prepared is staying informed, especially if you live in an area where you experience adverse or extreme weather.

Heavy Lake-Effect Snow

According to the National Weather Service, heavy lake-effect snow downwind from the Great Lakes is expected to continue through early this week.

This comes off the back of light to moderate snow coming from the Middle Mississippi Valley to the Central Appalachians over the weekend. There was light to moderate snow over parts of the Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley and Central Appalachians as the weekend concluded.

Plummeting Temperatures

The Northern Plains saw low temperatures – 15-20 degrees below average. The eastern part of the country saw temperatures around 10 degrees below average.

Cold air has prompted Cold Weather Advisories for North Dakota over the weekend. Additionally, upper-level troughing over the Upper Midwest/Upper Great Lakes into the Northeast and cold air streaming over the Great Lakes produced heavy lake-effect snow over the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, which is expected to continue this week.

The Western Gulf Coast experienced light rain on Saturday that is also expected to continue into early this week.

Snow, Cold Weather, and Power Outages

Does cold weather or snow impact your power? Most definitely. Snow and ice-related outages can occur due to variables like tree branches falling on power lines. Weight of precipitation can cause these sorts of calamities.

Equipment also has a propensity to fail during low temperatures. It’s also not uncommon for semis or automobiles to strike down power poles, which can cause prolonged outages.

Stay Warm and Stay Prepared

Snow, cold weather, and other winter trademarks can test our patience, often resulting in precarious conditions that affect our ability to keep our schedules and fulfill our obligations.

Managing cold weather isn’t as difficult as it might seem. Pack and wear layers for any outing and keep an emergency bag in your house and in any applicable vehicle. Invest in insulated, waterproof clothing and keep emergency food and water on hand – just in case you find yourself in a situation where the things you take for granted are taken away.
