Major Winter Storm from Cental Pains to Mid-Atlantic Brings Snow and Ice

As the start of the year gets underway many areas of the country are bracing for extreme weather. Widespread snow and damaging ice accumulations hit the Mid-Atlantic region of the country while the Mississippi Valley was hit by thunderstorms over the weekend.

Let it Snow

The central plains and the mid-Atlantic were at the low end of the storm. The central Untied States experienced winter storms as low pressure organized from the Texas Panhandle to Oklahoma.

Below average temperatures were already in place in the area with mixed precipitation in areas such as Kansas and southern Nebraska, which developed into snow patterns at the close of the weekend.

Thunderstorms Galore

On the low/warm side of the storm, the Lower Mississippi Valley was hit by severe thunderstorms. There were also tornado threats and large hail reported in the area, as well as damaging straight line winds.

The Storm Prediction Center ran an Enhanced Risk (level 3/5) for severe thunderstorms -- from northeastern Louisiana into western Mississippi over the weekend.

Temperatures have been anomalously warm from eastern Texas into the Lower Mississippi. Even areas like Colorado experienced highs in the 50s as of late, which may suggest more extreme winter weather on the horizon.
