As of early August, Tropical Storm Debby has appeared to move on from Florida and the East Coast of the United States. However, days following storm departure, residents continue to remain without power.
Hundreds of Thousands Without Power
Debby first arrived in Florida taking the form of a hurricane, progressing over the course of a week into tornadoes and flooding, terrorizing homes as it moved up the East Coast. According to The Associated Press, over 100,000 homes remain without power over four states.
Debby moved on to Canada, inundating south-central New York and north-central Pennsylvania with rain along the way. The storm prompted evacuations and in some cases even helicopter rescues. After leaving the U.S., the tropical storm was downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone as it continued its collision course northeast.
Debby leaves in its wake several businesses and homeowners without power in addition to the damage it has caused to individuals and communities.
Tips for Surviving a Tropical Storm
It’s an unfortunate reality that one has to go through such an event to truly understand its magnitude. However, we can all do a little more to prepare for an event like a tropical storm or the impact of extreme weather events.
First and foremost, during a tropical storm, it’s important to find shelter and stay indoors. Steer clear of windows, skylights, glass sliders, etc. If you are fortunate enough to have a basement, this is an ideal type of area to stay during a storm. If you do not have a basement, a small interior room on your home’s lowest level (such as a bathroom, closet, or hallway) will suffice. The idea is to put as many solid walls between you and the storm as possible.
Stay away from flood-prone areas. Flood waters are dangerous and may have hidden hazards. Walking, swimming, or driving through flood waters should be avoided. Stay alert and remain informed. If you have a portable radio you can listen to local and national storm alerts to stay on top of your local weather conditions.
