Setting Up Net Metering: A State-by-State Guide (Part 4)

Solar power is a great way to go green but it’s also a fantastic way to save on your monthly energy bills. By taking advantage of net metering, you can receive credits on your monthly utility bill for energy sent back to the grid from your solar energy system. However, not every state has the same process for setting up net metering.

Below, Geneverse finishes up our series discussing setting up net metering in the United States. This blog covers Rhode Island through Wyoming.

Rhode Island

Rhode Island residents looking to set up net metering will typically not need to do the application process themselves as it’s usually handled by solar installers via their interconnection application. However, it is important to let your installer/provider know as soon as possible that you’re interested in the program.

South Carolina

Net metering customers in South Carolina will have to make sure their solar energy systems meet state and local guidelines and meet certain safety standards. For instance, Duke Energy will make sure that your system is compliant with regulations. You can consult with your installer to make sure that your system gives you optimal results.

South Dakota

Although South Dakota does not currently have a state net metering policy in place, some utility providers may offer independent programs. Some providers may offer buybacks based on South Dakota Electric Tariffs.

Tennessee

Tennessee does not currently have a net metering policy. However, the Tennessee Valley Authority can buy excess energy from select customers through the Dispersed Power Production program. This rate for solar energy tends to fluctuate month to month.

Texas

There are no state-wide regulations for net metering in the state of Texas. However, some utilities in Texas may offer net metering. Check with local utility companies to explore buyback plans. While some providers may offer full credit, others may offer credits at lower power generation cost.

Utah

To set up net metering for Utah residents, you must first find reputable installers and compare quotes. You’ll have to submit an application, which will need to be reviewed before you are approved for interconnection. You’ll also need to obtain permits and pass a system inspection before you can turn on your system.

Vermont

Vermont is another state that has a fairly standard net metering program. Users will have to apply and receive approval in addition to paying for equipment and installation. Utility customers in Vermont are responsible for costs for any equipment necessary to connect net metering systems to utility grids. When all of these steps are completed, you should start seeing credits on your monthly bill when your system is online and producing energy.

Virginia

Residents in Virginia can explore net metering programs with local utility companies. For instance, Dominion Energy requires a Net Metering Interconnection Notification (NMIN) form to be filled out and turned into them. They will review the application and determine if the solar array in question meets all requirements for interconnection.

Washington

Those looking to set up net metering in Washington state will need to select the right installer and contact a local utility company, who will provide an application and may also require supporting documents – such as a Net Metering Agreement as well as a Net Metering Agreement.

Upon approval you will be provided with a Notice of Completion. After net meter inspection and installation you will be ready to earn credits on your electric bill.

West Virginia

West Virginia residents will need to complete the interconnection application process to ensure safety and reliability. After your equipment is successfully installed you will need to fill out and submit an Interconnection Agreement. Your utility company will review this application. Once it is accepted your net meter will be installed.

Wisconsin

Net metering customers in Wisconsin will need to fill out an application and an interconnection agreement. You’ll also have to furnish proof of homeowner’s insurance covering at least $300,000.00. Once you receive permission to operate from your utility provider you will be ready to start earning credits toward your monthly electric bill.

Wyoming

Wyoming net metering customers will need to fill out an application, acquire applicable permits, and have their solar energy systems inspected and approved. Once approved, your utility provider should be able to install a meter on your property within 7-10 days.
