As wild winter storms rage across the country, many individuals and families have been caught off guard. Extreme cold and snow have affected swaths of the United States, affecting cities all across the country.
If you’re facing severe weather, it’s important to have a game plan in place that will ensure you and your family are protected and living in some semblance of normalcy. Below, Geneverse provides a useful checklist that will help any household brave any storm.
Supply Runs
Paying attention to the weather forecast will help you stay on top of any winter storms heading your way. If there’s a snowstorm or extreme weather occurring in your area and you know about it ahead of time, this gives you the ability to anticipate what you may need.
Take a look at your fridge and pantry and take note of anything you’re running low on. Buy plenty of food and water, preferably enough to last the entire duration of the storm – perhaps even a few days afterward, especially if you don’t have the luxury of driving a four-wheel drive vehicle. Rear-wheel drive vehicles have a hard time making it up slopes of varying degrees when there’s ice, snow, and slush on the roads. It’s best to stay off the roads when they’re covered in snow and/or ice.
Stock up on toilet paper, canned food (fruits and veggies especially), bottled water, batteries, and perhaps even some MRE (meals ready to eat) just in case the power goes out.
Warm Clothing
It’s not uncommon for the electricity to go out during severe winter weather events. Unfortunately, if electricity goes out, so does your primary source of heat. This is true for furnaces, boilers, or electric heat. As a matter of fact, electricity is even required for gas furnaces to run.
We all take our heat and electricity for granted, but we have to be prepared for the worst. Wool socks, protective/warm gloves, warm clothes (including a thermal base layer), snow boots, and a zero-degree sleeping bag can all come through in the clutch if you’re unable to heat your home. Every member of the household should have plenty of warm clothes and means to stay warm when the weather gets cold.
Vehicle Preparation
Ideally, everyone will be able to stay at home during a severe weather event, but sometimes the unexpected occurs. Although it’s best to stay off the roads, some of us don’t always have that luxury, especially during emergencies or unforeseen circumstances.
Don’t assume that you’re absolutely not going to drive. Investing in winter tires will give your vehicle the best shot at navigating wintry roads. Arrange a vehicle emergency kit with first aid supplies, a flashlight (with fresh batteries), a blanket or zero-degree sleeping bag, bottled water, and a few servings of non-perishable food (freeze-dried pouches of camping food are ideal). These are all beneficial items to have if you’re ever snowed in or trapped in the snow/ice.
Backup Power
It is ideal during severe weather events to have a backup source of power. Gas generators can be used, however, they can only be utilized outdoors due to toxic fumes. Solar generators can be used indoors and outdoors, harnessing the power of the sun instead of running on fossil fuels.
Geneverse provides emergency backup power stations that can power 99% of your home appliances, electronics, and crucial medical devices. Even during a snowstorm, your household can stay powered throughout extreme weather events.
